Health systems for
Early Childhood Development

Supporting ECD through health systems is consistent with the broad World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health as a state of well-being. In the ECA region, primary health care services are almost universal with frequent encounters with families and children in their first years.

The main challenge is how to integrate support for holistic child development into provision of routine and regular health care services. Health care systems can do a lot to support caregivers through family centered services to strengthen family resources and skills to provide nurturing care to young children.
